At Melita, we know that treating employees well isn’t just a ‘nice-to-have’; it’s essential for our success. When our team members feel safe, supported, and appreciated, they bring their best selves to work every day—and that’s what fuels our success.
Our commitment to creating a thriving workplace is reflected in the latest results from our annual employee engagement survey. We ranked Best-in-Class among participating companies of a similar size, achieving a score of 75%. Team Cohesion and Leadership Effectiveness emerged as standout strengths, scoring above the average overall and best-in-class benchmarks. Additionally, when compared to 33 other participating companies, we outperformed the average score of all categories including companies of same industry. In key areas such as Psychological Safety and Performance Orientation, we also performed slightly better or aligned with these benchmarks—reinforcing our dedication to fostering an environment where every team member can thrive.
Our wellbeing strategy goes beyond the basics. We take a comprehensive approach that spans seven key areas: safety, care, prevention, support for parenthood, skill development, inclusivity, and open communication. Each area plays a vital role in ensuring that Melita remains a best-in-class employer.
1. Safety: The Foundation of Wellbeing
Workplace safety is our starting point. In 2021, we were proud to achieve ISO 45001 certification for Occupational Health and Safety, a testament to our strong health and safety management system. We continually monitor and address incidents and near misses to ensure a safe environment. Our shops and offices are designed with employee comfort in mind, featuring ergonomic furniture, calming colours and uncluttered spaces that support both physical and mental well-being.
2. Caring & Wellbeing: Supporting Through Life’s Ups and Downs
Our employees are our biggest strength and we’re here for them through all of life’s seasons. With 20% of our team trained as certified Mental Health First Aiders, we’re ready to offer support when it’s needed most. Our collaboration with the Richmond Foundation allows us to provide free, anonymous mental health support, ensuring employees have resources for resilience and well-being.
3. Preventive Health Measures: Promoting Long-Term Health
From free eye tests and health screenings to offering healthy meal options, we prioritise preventive care. Our annual Health Week provides team members with access to voluntary medical checks, while our health insurance program supports comprehensive care, including screenings and consultations. We believe that prevention is key to maintaining a healthy, thriving workforce.
4. Parenthood Support: Helping Our Parents Balance Work and Family
We know the challenges working parents face and we’re committed to making things easier. From flexible work arrangements to subsidised holiday camps for the kids, we want to help our working parents so they can find the balance that’s right for them between being great parents and great employees. Our head office has a dedicated nursing room, and just over the road there’s the Quaddies childcare centre, where we’ll happily cover the cost of the application fee.
5. Skill Development: Fostering Growth and Fulfilment
We believe development drives engagement. We’ve proudly supported over 40 team members with scholarships for higher education and extra days of leave for studying. We encourage our people to shape their careers with the support and shared knowledge of experienced team members, fostering self-driven growth within clear career paths. By embracing diverse forms of learning and investing in continuous growth, we help our people feel valued and fulfilled in their roles.
6. Inclusion and Diversity: Strengthening Our Team
Diversity and inclusion are at the heart of our culture and the heart of our team, we have around 25 nationalities represented, 35% of our workforce are women. We are a signatory of the Malta Diversity & Inclusion charter and we are committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels valued. Through our Women in Leadership program and annual sports and social activities, we build a community that embraces and celebrates difference.
7. Open Communication: Ensuring Clarity and Transparency
Clear communication reduces stress and fosters trust. Through weekly CEO updates, monthly bulletins and collaborative work platforms, we ensure that our team members feel informed and engaged. This transparency builds confidence and a sense of belonging, helping us create a truly unified workforce.

Overall, although our commitment to being a best-in-class employer is constant, how we go about creating employee satisfaction is constantly evolving. Beyond the many metrics we measure, and the surveys we do, some of the best ways of knowing that our approach is the right one are the informal ones: the corridor conversations, the formal check-ins for our new joiners – and the informal ‘canteen check-ins’ for everyone!
At Melita, we believe that a thriving team creates a thriving business. By continuously investing in our people, fostering a culture of trust, and prioritising well-being, we’re not just meeting best-in-class standards—we’re setting them.
