In a bid to support vulnerable families and individuals, Melita Limited is providing an array of internet, TV and telephony services free of charge to YMCA Malta. The outbreak of COVID-19 has led to increased hardships with more Maltese and foreign families with children, as well as individuals, seeking the communal services of YMCA. With this in mind, Melita is providing a number of internet Flexi Bundles packages, wide screen TVs complete with a wide selection of channels and unlimited calls to local landlines and mobile numbers to ‘Dar Niki Cassar’, ‘Y Communal House’ and the Youth Facility Centre which are all administered by YMCA Malta.
Living in communal houses is not an easy task, as YMCA’s Chief Executive Anthony Camilleri explains: “Having 30 or so characters, each with their own personality and story, living together is a reality that only those who experience it can truly understand and appreciate the daily hardships. Things we take for granted, such as your own space and individual room, become a luxury. The support provided by Melita will go a long way in helping make the resident’s experience a little less difficult and provide the means to stay close to important people in their life.”
Camilleri further explained that homelessness can happen to everyone despite gender, race, ethnicity, culture, level of education, and employment. For instance, loss of employment can lead to financial issues culminating in not being able to pay monthly dues resulting in homelessness.
Mireille Muscat, Head of Marketing at Melita, said: “YMCA Malta does a sterling job in helping families and individuals who have fallen on bad times get back on their feet and start afresh. It is our hope that through the services provided we can help the residents at YMCA keep in touch with their loved ones, especially during the current circumstances.”
Originally founded in England by George Williams in 1844, YMCA Malta opened its doors in 1976. In 2019, YMCA Malta was officially launched as the National YMCA with local YMCA branches in several localities and forms part of the YMCA International Network, YMCA Europe and the World Alliance of YMCA’s. YMCA Malta is a non-government organisation, non-profit, voluntary and ecumenical movement seeking to promote the vision to build a more just society.
